Which Pay Structure Is Used More In The Music Business Pay To Play Three Walling, Or Four Walling And Where Are They Used??

 {Part 3 Musicians & Pay}

Part 1 -

The Good The Bad And The Not So Ugly Sides Of Pay To Play In The Music Industry

Part 2 -

What Are Three Walling And Four Walling In The Music Business?

Part 3 Today -

Which Pay Structure Is Used The Most For Musicians To Get Paid, And Where Are They Used?

In the music business, the most commonly used structure depends on the level of the artist, venue, and market.

Here's a breakdown of each model and its prevalence in the business.

Pay to Play

This is more common in smaller venues, especially in major cities with competitive music scenes (e.g., Los Angeles). Unsigned or emerging artists often face this model, where they must sell a certain number of tickets or pay upfront to perform. While it's frowned upon by many musicians, it's still widely used for local showcases and battle-of-the-bands events.

Three-Walling

This is a hybrid approach where the venue handles some aspects (like the bar, security, or ticketing), while the artist/promoter rents the space for the performance. This model is more common in mid-sized venues or independent theater-style venues that aren't primarily music clubs.

Four-Walling

In this model, the artist or promoter rents the entire venue and controls ticket sales, production, and all associated costs. This is most commonly used for higher-level independent artists or promoters who are confident in their ability to sell tickets and make a profit. It's often seen in theaters, casinos, and some larger independent venues.

Where Are They Most Commonly Used?

Pay-to-play dominates small club scenes but is mostly avoided by established artists.

Three-Walling is common for mid-tier artists and promoters who want some venue support.

Four-Walling is used by bigger independent acts, tribute bands, or promoters who want total control.

In general, three-walling and four-walling are more prevalent in the industry than pay-to-play, especially for artists with an established following.

All three are forms of self-financing in the music business, where artists or promoters cover upfront costs. Three-walling simply means renting a venue while sharing profits with the house. Four-walling is fully renting a space and keeping all revenue, while Pay-to-play requires artists to buy or sell tickets to perform.

What Are Three Walling And Four Walling In The Music Business?

In my blog yesterday, I talked about "Pay-To-Play" structure in the music industry.

If you're unsure about what it is, or how it works. You can read my blog <Here

Today I'm going to talk about "Three-Walling" and Four-Walling".

In the music business, three-walling and four-walling are terms related to venue rentals and promotions, often used in live concert events.

Here is a short & simple explanation about what the two structures are.

Three-Walling

The venue covers some costs, such as security, ticketing, or promotion.

The promoter or artist is responsible for additional expenses like production, marketing, and staffing.

The profit is usually split between the venue and the promoter based on an agreement.

This arrangement is common in situations where a venue partners with an artist or promoter to share risks and rewards.

Four-Walling

The artist or promoter rents the venue outright, covering all costs, including security, staffing, and ticketing.

The venue does not share in ticket sales; instead, they make money strictly from the rental fee.

The artist or promoter keeps 100% of the ticket sales but also assumes all financial risks.

This model is often used for independent artists, comedy acts, and special events where full control over the event is desired.

Now that I've discussed what Pay-To-Play, three-walling, and what four-walling are.
In my blog tomorrow. I'm going to be talking about where are the three types of structures most commonly used at in the music business.

The Good The Bad And The Not So Ugly Sides Of Pay To Play In The Music Industry

A few of my friends in the music business have asked me what I think about Pay to Play.

After a handful of conversations and some research. This is what I came up with.

Pay-to-play is a controversial topic in the music industry, especially in cities like Las Vegas, where competition for stage time is high. Here’s a breakdown of the good, the bad, and the not-so-ugly sides of pay-to-play:

Good Sides of Pay-to-Play

Exposure for Emerging Artists – Provides a chance for new or unsigned musicians to play at well-known venues, potentially gaining new fans and industry attention.

Opportunity to Perform on Big Stages – Some pay-to-play shows take place in venues where artists wouldn’t normally get a shot, allowing them to say they've played at a major club or festival.

Networking Potential – Can lead to connections with promoters, other bands, and industry professionals, which might open doors to better opportunities.

Control Over Performance – Since bands are essentially buying a slot, they sometimes have more control over their setlist, promotion, and guest list compared to being booked by a venue.

Potential for Profit – If ticket sales are handled well, bands can actually make money by selling more tickets than they’re required to buy upfront.

The Bad (And The Not So Ugly) Sides of Pay-to-Play

Financial Risk – Bands may have to front money for tickets they can't sell, leaving them out of pocket.

Devalues Artists – Instead of being paid for their talent, musicians are essentially paying to work, which can set a bad industry standard.

Not Always a Fair System – Watch Out! Some promoters take advantage of eager musicians, charging high fees for little to no real exposure.

Can Lead to Poor Crowds – Since some bands may struggle to sell their required tickets, shows can end up with weak attendance, leading to a disappointing gig.

Hurts Local Music Scenes – It can push out talented but financially struggling artists in favor of those who can afford to pay for stage time, leading to a scene built more on money than skill.

There are more sides and variables to "Pay to Play" in the music industry.
I'll be talking about them in my next blog post.

{My Take}

While pay-to-play can offer opportunities, it’s often a risky and exploitative model. Musicians should weigh the potential benefits against the downsides and consider alternatives like building a strong local following, networking with venue owners, or seeking fairer booking deals.

It's all about making money. Right?

But by whose expense?

What Makes A Good Music Bar Venue In Las Vegas?

One of my favorite places to hang out in Las Vegas is a small, friendly bar that offers live music, good food, and drinks.

A good Las Vegas music bar venue should combine the right atmosphere, sound quality, and entertainment variety to stand out in a city packed with live music options.

According to local music fans. Here are some key elements that help make these venues stand out in LV. (Las Vegas)

Location & Atmosphere

Situated in a vibrant area easy to get to locations.

(Fremont Street, The Strip, Main Streets, Arts District, etc.).

Unique décor that matches the music vibe (rock, blues, jazz, country, etc.).

Comfortable seating and standing areas for different audience preferences.

Sound & Stage Setup

High-quality sound system with well-balanced acoustics.

A well-lit stage that provides good visibility for performers and audiences.

Proper spacing for both intimate acoustic acts and full bands.

Drink & Food Selection

A solid drink menu featuring signature cocktails, craft beer, or themed drinks.

Food that complements the music scene (bar bites, upscale dining, or themed dishes).

Reasonable pricing, considering Vegas’ tourist-heavy crowd.

Entertainment Variety

A mix of live music genres to attract different crowds (rock, blues, country, jazz, tribute bands, etc.).

Special themed nights, open mic events, or jam sessions.

A good rotation of local and touring musicians to keep things fresh.

Crowd & Ambience

A balance between locals and tourists for an authentic Vegas feel.

A well-managed entry system (door cover, guest list, or VIP sections).

Extra Features

Outdoor patio or rooftop options for a different vibe.

Gaming elements like pool tables, darts, or video poker machines.

Merch area for bands to sell CDs, shirts, or memorabilia.

{My Take}

"Las Vegas has no shortage of incredible music bar venues, each offering a unique experience. Have a favorite spot or a hidden gem that I should check out? I know I have mine!

Sometimes You Just Need A Dose Of Good Old Rock N Roll !

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball after a curve ball. Nothing can seem to go right. Your life seems to be spinning out of control. Nothing helps!?

I've found out through trial and error that listening to my favorite music seems to help.

Putting on my earphones, and turning up the volume on my favorite tunes, while leaning back in my recliner puts me in my happy place. :-)

But Why?

Here’s a breakdown of why music has such a strong emotional and physiological effect on us.

Dopamine & Pleasure

When you listen to music you love, your brain releases dopamine, creating feelings of happiness and satisfaction.

Anticipation of a favorite part of a song increases dopamine even more.

Emotional Connection

Music taps into deep emotions, helping you process feelings like joy, sadness, or nostalgia.

Certain melodies or lyrics can trigger memories, intensifying emotional responses.

Stress Reduction & Relaxation

Slow or calming music lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation.

Upbeat music can energize and improve mood instantly.

Social Connection

Music brings people together, whether through concerts, shared playlists, or bonding over favorite artists.

It enhances feelings of belonging and connection.

Boosts Motivation & Performance

High-energy music can enhance workouts by increasing endurance and focus.

Music can also improve productivity and concentration while working or studying.

Pain Relief

Music therapy is used in medical settings to reduce pain perception.

It distracts the mind from discomfort and promotes relaxation.

Whether it’s the adrenaline rush of a Van Halen guitar solo or the chill vibes of a smooth melody.
Music has the power to elevate your mood and improve your well-being.

You've heard that "Music Is Good For The Soul"

It Sure Is !

Little Known And Unheard Of Facts About Las Vegas Casinos

Since my first visit to Las Vegas in 1986, I've been really interested in the city's history. Getting to meet and to become friends with Las Vegas Mayor's Oscar and Carolyn Goodman is one of my high points of living here since 1999.

I'm always reading posts about Las Vegas' storied past. I guess that you can call me a part-time historian of Las Vegas.

Here are some of the facts about Las Vegas and their casinos that have stuck in my mind.

To begin. The First Casino Wasn’t even on the Strip. The first licensed casino in Las Vegas was the Northern Club (now part of the Fremont Street Experience) in 1931.

There’s an Underground Vault Beneath the Strip. Many casinos store their cash reserves in massive underground vaults, but the locations and details are top secret. You Think?

The 1980 MGM Grand Fire Changed Safety Regulations. The devastating fire at the MGM Grand (now Bally’s) led to stricter fire safety regulations, including mandatory sprinklers in all hotel rooms across Las Vegas.

Casinos Pump in Scents to Influence Mood. Many casinos use custom scents in their air systems to create a pleasant environment and encourage players to stay longer.

There’s a Secret High-Stakes Gambling Room at the Bellagio, known as “The Office.” This ultra-exclusive room is reserved for million-dollar bets by elite gamblers. Guess I'll never see that room!

The Riviera Was a Film Favorite. Before being demolished in 2016, the Riviera appeared in classic movies like Casino, Ocean’s 11, and The Hangover. The Riviera has been seen in over 13 major motion pictures. Can you say, "Super Star among Las Vegas Casinos"?

There are more slot machines than the number of people in Las Vegas.

There’s a Card-Counting Blacklist. Casinos share information on professional card counters, and some have even used facial recognition technology to identify known players. I wonder if I'm on the $5.00 dollar Blacklist. Lol.

There are many other little-known facts about Las Vegas Casinos. Some you can believe and some you can't. That's what makes part of the allure and the attraction that Las Vegas has over people. Win or lose, you just don't know!

Along with the Beatles, Billy Joel and Simon And Garfunkel, pointed Kyle in the right direction for his future in the music industry.

From 1989 through 1991 Kyle took the stage with his first original music professional band "What".

Graduating from Berklee College Of Music in 1991 gave Kyle his educational background in music that he'd much need to reach the heights that he's attained in the world of music today!

Top Reasons Why People Come To Las Vegas?

If you ask me why people visit Las Vegas,

I'd have to say it's for the excitement of Gambling.

But there's so much more to do here in Sin City LV.

As for me, I hitched a job (Media) transfer in 1999. And moved here to write about this exciting city!

That's my reason for coming to Las Vegas. To work and to live here.

* Based on a recent Visitor Profile Study by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Here are the top reasons why people come to LV.

Vacation or Pleasure: 58%

Visiting Friends or Relatives: 12%

Attending Conventions, Trade Shows, or Corporate Meetings: 7%

Gambling: 6% (My guess was way off)

Other Business Purposes: 3%

Attending Special Events: 4%

Attending Sporting Events: 3%

Weddings: 2%

Just Passing Through: 1%

Who Knows Why: 4%

----------

Notably, while only 6% visited primarily to gamble, 75% of all visitors engaged in gambling during their stay.

Additionally, Las Vegas has emerged as a significant sports destination, attracting over 2 million visitors annually for sporting events.

These statistics provide insight into the diverse motivations that draw people to Las Vegas, highlighting its multifaceted appeal beyond just gambling and entertainment.

As for moving here?

Las Vegas experienced a 1.9% population increase between July 2023 and July 2024, leading the western U.S. in growth during that period.

In 2018, the Las Vegas Valley had an estimated population of 2,227,053.
By 2024, estimates suggest the population reached approximately 2,953,000.
This growth indicates an average annual increase of approximately 30,000 to 40,000 residents over the past few decades.

However, annual growth rates can fluctuate due to various factors, including economic conditions and migration trends.

These figures highlight Las Vegas's appeal as a rapidly growing metropolitan area, attracting tens of thousands of new residents each year.

Viva Las Vegas!

Why Are There So Many Haters In This World Especially In The Music Industry?

 Life of a writer.

The first thing I do each morning is check my Associated Press and United Press International news feeds. Then, I read what's going on with my friends on Facebook. Next, I do my ghostwriting for the two companies that I write for. Last but not least, it's time for me to write my blog.

While looking at Facebook this morning. The 1st post to catch my eye was a post about haters in the music Industry. Even I as a writer have experienced haters.

Haters exist everywhere, but the music industry seems to amplify the haters!

Here are my thoughts about why there are so many haters in the music industry.

Music is deeply personal, and tastes vary wildly. What one person loves, another might despise. This leads to strong opinions, sometimes expressed negatively. In my fifty-five years as a music and entertainment journalist, I've found that bands that perform their own original music seem to be singled out more by haters. I remember when the Beatles hit the American Music Scene. Some people liked them, some people did not. Look at how they changed the music industry!

The music industry is highly competitive, and success can breed resentment. Musicians, critics, or fans who feel overlooked might lash out at those who make it big.

Some people believe in a “right” way to make or enjoy music. If an artist breaks norms or achieves mainstream success, purists might reject them.

Social media gives people an easy way to criticize others without consequences. Trolls enjoy stirring up negativity for attention. There's a lot of this going on!

Music fans often form strong attachments to artists, leading to conflicts with rival fanbases. This happens in all genres, from rock to hip-hop to pop.

When artists change their look or sound, or bands change their members. Some fans feel betrayed and turn into critics. Think of how people reacted when Bob Dylan went electric or Metallica cut their hair.

If an artist or a band is constantly in the spotlight, people can get tired of hearing about them and react with negativity.

{My Take}

To my friends in the music biz.

At the end of the day, haters are only voicing their opinion.

The best approach?

Keep making the music you love and enjoy, and let the negativity roll off.

Life and music goes on!

Social Media Profile Pictures What You See Is What You Get?

With all of the photo apps available in this modern era. Social media profile pics may not be "What You See Is What You Get"! From making yourself look more pleasing, a younger you. To shaving off a few pounds here and there.

The saying should go when it comes to social media profile pictures.

"What You See Is What I Want You To Get"!

What do you want your Social Media Profile Pic To Say (Represent)?

In general, people use their social media profile pictures to represent different aspects of their lives.

Researchers in the fields of psychology, marketing, journalism, and communications have conducted many case studies about social media profile pictures. Here is what they found in their studies of why we use the profile pictures that we use to express ourselves on social media platforms.

People try to represent:

Personality & Interests

A musician might have a profile picture with their instrument or of themselves performing on stage.

A sports fan might use a picture of themselves wearing their favorite team’s jersey.

Professionalism & Credibility

LinkedIn users often opt for professional headshots to appear competent and trustworthy.

Entrepreneurs and business owners may use polished images to build a brand.

Social Status & Lifestyle

Some people showcase luxury items, travel destinations, or high-end fashion.

Influencers may use highly edited or aesthetic shots to maintain a curated image.

Creativity & Uniqueness

Artists, designers, or photographers might use artistic or abstract photos.

Some use filters, digital art, or custom avatars to stand out.

Mystery or Anonymity

Some choose silhouettes, side profiles, or faceless images for privacy.

Others use memes, cartoons, or symbolic pictures instead of their own face.

Humor & Playfulness

Funny expressions, exaggerated poses, or humorous memes show a fun side.

People may also use pop culture references or inside jokes.

Relationships & Belonging

Couples may use a picture with their partner.

Some use group photos to highlight friendships or family bonds.

Activism & Beliefs

Profile pictures may include social justice symbols, or religious imagery.

Some people add filters or overlays supporting causes they care about.

{My Take}

Your profile picture is like a digital first impression.
What do you think yours says about you?

Battle Of The Bands Best Band Contests Hot Events In LV !

Right now, "Battle Of The Bands" and "Best Band" contests are very popular in Las Vegas.

Two that I'm currently involved with are "The Battle Of The Bands" at The Bonfire LV, and the upcoming "Best Rock Band In Las Vegas" contest at The Las Vegas Guitar Trade Show - RockGodz Hall Of Fame Awards Ceremony coming up May 30th thru June 1st at the Silverton Hotel Casino.

The Bonfire LV

Best Rock Band In Las Vegas - Las Vegas Guitar Trade Show

There are many benefits for both new and established bands in the industry to enter these contests.

Here are just a few of the many benefits that bands enjoy from taking part in these contests.

One of the main reasons is the Exposure.

These events attract music fans, industry professionals, and other musicians, helping bands gain new listeners and potential networking opportunities.

Prizes, Awards & Opportunities – Many contests offer cash, studio recording time, new gear, or even performance slots at major festivals or venues.

The contest at the Bonfire LV awards the monthly winning band a thousand dollars in cold hard cash. While the Best Rock Band In Las Vegas contest at the Las Vegas Guitar Trade Show is awarding the winning band a RockGodz Hall Of Fame Platinum Award Of Excellence. And will be the opening band for the RockGodz Hall Of Fame Awards Ceremony on May 31st.  Plus, National exposure across the US.

Experience & Growth.

Competing helps bands refine their stage presence, tighten their performances, and handle the pressure of live shows.

Building a Fanbase.

Local or online battles can introduce bands to new fans, especially if there's audience voting involved.

Industry Recognition.

Some competitions are judged by industry professionals, giving bands a chance to be noticed by record labels, producers, or booking agents.

Fun & Camaraderie.

It's a chance to play live, connect with other musicians, and enjoy the competitive yet supportive atmosphere of the local scene.

Did you know that the Beatles and Karen & Richard Carpenter competed in many Battle Of The Bands contests before they were famous!

Keep Rock'N !

Las Vegas Is A Classic Rock City Or Is It?

According to local radio station playlists, concert schedules, social media trends, streaming music data, and local venue listings. There's more that meets the eyes (And Ears) in Las Vegas than Classic Rock music. Or is there?

Las Vegas is known for its diverse and vibrant music scene, with live performances across a wide range of genres. Here are the most popular music genres that are played and performed in Las Vegas that help make Las Vegas "The Entertainment Capital Of The World".

It's no surprise that Rock & Classic Rock dominate the LV Music Scene!

Rock has a strong presence in Vegas, with tribute bands, cover bands, and legendary rock acts frequently performing on the Strip and at local venues. Bands like The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, and Van Halen tribute bands are common in casinos and concert halls.

EDM (Electronic Dance Music)

Las Vegas is one of the global hotspots for EDM, with world-famous DJs like Tiësto, Calvin Harris, and Steve Aoki having residencies at clubs like Omnia, Zouk, and XS. Festivals like EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival) bring massive crowds for electronic music performances.

Pop & Contemporary Hits

Many A-list pop stars hold residencies in Vegas, including artists like Adele, Usher, and Bruno Mars. Pop cover bands also dominate casino lounges and bars.

Country

With venues like Ole Red, Gilley's Saloon, and Stoney’s Rockin’ Country and big concerts at T-Mobile Arena, country music has a solid fan base in Las Vegas.

Hip-Hop & R&B

Vegas nightclubs regularly host major hip-hop artists such as Drake, Cardi B, and Travis Scott.

Jazz & Blues

Jazz and blues can be found in more intimate settings like The Smith Center, The Sand Dollar Lounge, and various casino bars. Local and touring jazz musicians keep the genre alive in Vegas nightlife.

Latin Music (Reggaeton, Salsa, Bachata, Mariachi)

Latin music has a huge audience in Las Vegas, with artists like Bad Bunny and J Balvin selling out arenas. Clubs and bars regularly feature salsa and bachata nights.

Broadway & Show Tunes

Many of Vegas' entertainment productions, like Cirque du Soleil and musical theater shows, feature Broadway-style performances. The Venetian and The Smith Center frequently host major touring productions.

Heavy Metal & Hard Rock

Vegas has a strong underground metal scene, with venues like Count's Vamp’d hosting metal bands regularly. Major rock festivals like Sick New World and When We Were Young cater to rock and metal fans.

Indie & Alternative

The local indie scene thrives in smaller venues like The Space and Backstage Bar & Billiards. Bands like The Killers (who originated from Vegas) helped put the city on the indie rock map.

{My Take}

Las Vegas offers a little bit of everything when it comes to music.

But Is Las Vegas A Classic Rock City?

I Say It Is!

Rock On ...

{My Thoughts About The Rock N' Roll Church}

The Rock N' Roll Church brings together a band of Rock ‘N' Roll legends.

The ultimate fusion of experience, talent, and larger-than-life personas.

It’s more than just a band—it’s a movement, a cleansing of the soul. And a celebration of music that has defined many generations in the past as well into the future!

When rock legends like these five unite, they bring decades of hit songs, unforgettable performances, and the kind of musicianship that only comes with time and experience. Each member has already made history, and together, they redefine it through the Rock N' Roll Church services (Performances).

These five ultra-talented men aren’t just musicians—they’re rock gods who’ve spent a lifetime commanding audiences. From blistering guitar solos to powerhouse vocals, every show is an electrifying spectacle that reminds fans why rock ‘n’ roll will never die.

Nor will the Rock N' Roll Church!
